European Parliament Israel Allies Caucus members Magdi Allam and Roger Helmer tackle EU-guidelines
The Israel Allies Foundation commends Italian MEP Magdi Cristiano Allam and MEP Roger Helmer from the UK, both members of its European Parliament’s Israel Allies Caucus for taking action on the issue of the “Israel Grants Guidelines” enacted by the EU-Commission on July 19, 2013. These guidelines, which had brought about a new low in EU-Israel relations, already serve as a stepping stone for actions of some European foreign ministries and companies towards the goals of the BDS-movement (boycott, divestment and sanctions) against Israeli companies and institutions. MEPs Allam and Helmer, in their parliamentary question to the EU-Commission, challenged the basic claim, that Judea and Samaria were “occupied territories” and thus, Israeli settlement there would be “illegal”. What is more, they requested the Commission to explain its double standard on “occupied territories”, as elsewhere the EU not only accepts, but also partially supports occupation, as is the case with Morocco occupying Western Sahara and with Turkey occupying Northern Cyprus. You can see their official parliamentary question here and the EU-Commission’s answer, here.
Roger Helmer and Magdi Cristiano Allam have visited Judea and Samaria just recently as part of a fact-finding mission organized by the Israel Allies Foundation during its Jerusalem Chairman’s Conference 2013 in September, which was co-hosted by the World Jewish Congress (WJC) and the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ). During their trip to Judea and Samaria both politicians gained insight into the history and strategic importance of Judea and Samaria as well as into the already existing close cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians in the Barkan industrial park, one of fourteen of its kind beyond the green line – providing well-paid jobs for more than 10,000 Palestinians. In this way, the two European lawmakers experienced first hand, what the “Israeli Grants Guidelines“ enacted by the EU-Commission inflict on Jewish and Palestinian residents of the region.
