Press Release: Advocates Gather in Austin to Support Anti-BDS Legislation

AUSTIN, TX – Hundreds of citizens from across Texas gathered in Austin today at the State Capitol to advocate for legislation aimed at prohibiting the state from contracting with companies that participate in a boycott of Israel.

HB 89 in the House and SB 134 in the Senate requires companies that contract with the Texas state government to certify that they do not and will not in the future participate in boycotts of Israel. State pension and endowment funds are likewise barred from investing in companies that boycott Israel.

The Israel Allies Foundation, together with the Israel Project, StandWithUs, B’nai B’rith International, the Jewish Federation’s Israel Action Network, AIPAC, the AJC, CUFI, Chabad and others coordinated this statewide effort to rally Texas citizens to the state capitol.

Rep. Phil King (R-Weatherford), who introduced HB 89 in the House remarked:

“BDS is not only Israel’s problem, its Texas’ problem as well. I am honored to stand with citizens from across Texas that reject the anti-Semitic BDS Movement. We understand that strong Texas-Israel relations through economic cooperation, academics, agricultural collaboration and in a host of other areas are vital to the future of Texas. I am hopeful that Texas will join other states around the country in protecting our economy, our taxpayer dollars and our great ally Israel from national origin discrimination.”

“I genuinely appreciate the Israel Allies Foundation’s leadership, educational resources and policy support on this issue and in helping make today a great success.”

The Israel Allies Foundation has provided policy expertise to dozens of legislators in States across the country, resulting in 16 Governors signing into law bills utilizing this policy model - targeting State contracting together and/or pension and endowment investments.

IAF U.S. Director Joseph Sabag, who addressed the participants at the advocacy day’s opening session, remarked:

"The citizens of Texas are well served by this bill as a matter of economic policy, public policy and foreign policy. Together with all of our partner organizations, we salute your efforts in supporting this important legislation."
